Local organizations receive FreshConnect grants

Governor Cuomo announced Thursday FreshConnect grants to 34 projects around the state that will help increase access to New York farm products for residents in low-income and underserved areas.

"This is really a win-win situation for farmers and for families across the state as we try to provide more access and easier access to locally grown, fresh farm products," said Governor Cuomo in a statement. "These FreshConnect grants will support creative solutions to get New York farm products to underserved areas of the state, creating new economic opportunities for our farmers while, at the same time, providing healthy options for more New Yorkers."

Order forms available for Conservation Tree and Shrub program

The Conservation Tree and Shrub program is conducted every year by the Soil and Water Conservation District.

The program offers a variety of seedlings/transplants, ground covers and wildflower seed mixes at reduced rates. This is to encourage conservation planting.

Tree tubes, marking flags and fertilizer tablets are also offered. Orders by March 23 will ensure availability.

Farmers wanted for Thruway farmers markets

Farmers wanted for Thruway farmers markets

Local farmers are wanted for the “Tailgate Farmers Markets” at selected travel plazas along the Thruway.

The New York State Thruway Authority is looking for farmers to participate in the markets which open in mid May and continue through Nov. 1, depending on the availability of product.

The markets offer fresh farm produce to drivers on the Thruway and also give farmers the opportunity to sell and promote their products and produce.

Participation in the markets is limited to New York farmers and growers who grow local fresh fruits, vegetables, edible herbs, cider and horticultural products and only produce grown in New York State will be accepted.

FEMA offers kitchen safety tips for a happy Thanksgiving

During the holiday season, the kitchen is the place where families gather to prepare hardy and delicious meals. It is also the place that can be most dangerous during this joyful time of year.

According to FEMA, cooking equipment like a range or stovetop is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries in the U.S. During the holidays, the risk only increases.

Below are some cooking safety tips from FEMA that can help you and your loved ones stay safe while cooking this year’s Thanksgiving feast.

CCE hosts class for amateur berry farmers

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Albany County will host "Berry and Small Fruit Production Twilight Meeting for Beginning Farmers" on Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m. in the Micosta Nursery in Hudson.

This free meeting is designed to introduce participants to some key considerations in making the decision on whether to grow a fruit or berry selling business.  This meeting will also help them with crop selection.  

Extension Educator Steven McKay will be on hand to talk about getting started in berry and small fruit production and specifically discuss site analysis,    soil sampling and making amendments, preparing a field for planting, and selecting plants to grow.

CCE hosts 'Garden Education Day'

Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Albany County will hold a Garden Education Day on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Extension building which is located at 24 Martin Road in Voorheesville.  

Annual, perennial, herb, and vegetable plants along with annual hanging baskets, container gardens, and small trees will be offered for sale. Proceeds will be used to develop and maintain public gardens at the Extension, in the City of Albany and surrounding areas.  

In addition, Master Gardener volunteers will conduct gardening demonstartions, soil pH tests and tours of the Memorial Garden.  Master Gardeners will also be on hand to answer gardening questions.

Town begins to flush water system

Town begins to flush water system

The Latham Water District will begin its yearly flushing of the water system on Monday, March 21 and will continue until May 26.

Flushing will be performed during the day between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hydrants in the town will also be flushed beginning Sunday, March 27 in
between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Residents may notice discoloration of their water while the town flushes the hydrants. This is normal and it is not harmful, however, residents are being cautioned to check their water before using washing machines or other appliances.

If discoloration persists notify the Latham Water District at 783-2750.
