Multi-car crash ties up Central Avenue Wednesday

A multi-car crash tied up traffic along already busy Central Avenue during afternoon rush hour on Wednesday.

Five cars were involved and alcohol was not a factor.

Two people were rushed to area hospitals.

The crash occurred in front of the Colonie Volunteer Fire Company at about 4:15pm.

Officials say it was caused by an 80-year old driver who suffered some sort of medical problem and crossed over the double yellow line, hitting the others cars - at least one of them head-on.

Assistant Fire Chief Matt Redick said "I was on the road so i didn't see the initial accident happen but when i pulled up there were cars and pieces all over Central Avenue.

The elderly driver who caused the accident, 80-year old Kurt Dano of Latham, is at Albany Medical Center. His condition is not known.

Also injured, 59-year old Juanita Sturdivant of Colonie.

She was treated at Albany Memorial Hospital for chest pains and released.

70-year William Sturdivant suffered knee and shoulder pain.

All other drivers were un-injured.

Everyone was wearing seatbelts.

The investigation is continuing.
