May is Motorcycle Safety Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Month and the Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding motorists of some helpful safety tips.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, there are more than 655,000 licensed motorcyclists and more than 34,000 registered motorcycles in New York State.

In the past 10 years, motorcycle licenses have increased by 28 percent and registrations have increased by 76 percent.

“With the summer months approaching we will be seeing more motorcycles take to our roadways,” said Commissioner Fiala. “We want to make sure motorcyclists are using proper safety precautions and remind motorists to watch for them and share the road,” said Barbara J. Fiala, NYS DMV Commissioner and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair.

The following are some tips from the DMV for drivers to help keep motorcyclists safe on our roadways.

Aqua Ducks to meet Kayak Flotilla

ALBANY - On Tuesday, May 15, the Albany Aqua Ducks head out to Splashdown into the Hudson River to lead a flotilla that will be welcoming renowned British expeditionary Richard Harpham and adventurer/photographer Glen Charles.

The two kayakers are traveling 500 miles from Buffalo's historic Erie Canal Harbor to the Statue of Liberty, a journey that began on May 1 and ends on May 21. They are kayacking along the Erie Canal and through its 36 locks.

The two men arre carrying a container of water from the canal that they will pur into the Hudson River, symbolically linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

 

Windy day affects umbrellas on tarmac

In case you were wondering how rainy and windy it was this morning when the President touched down, Colonie town supervisor, Paula Mahan’s umbrella got blown inside-out by the wind as she was walking next to the President.

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings came to the rescue and quickly fixed it.

CREDC to hold meeting Tuesday, May 1

The Capital Region Economic Development Council will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 1.

According to a statement, the CREDC meeting will include an update on council activities and project tracking, an overview of the council’s new workgroup structure and a quick presentation on the work of the regional councils in 2012 and the second round of the Consolidated Funding Application process.

People who attend the meeting will also have the opportunity to provide the council with written questions and feedback related to the Strategic Plan and CFA process.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the RPI East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV) gymnasium in Troy.

Members of the CREDC, businesses, individuals, organizations, labor and education representatives from the Capital Region are invited to attend the event.

The council defines the Capital Region as Albany, Columbia, Greene, Saratoga, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington counties.

Judge Judy to speak at commencement

One of TV’s best known judges is making a special trip to Albany.

Judge Judith Sheindlin, better known as Judge Judy, is delivering the keynote address at UAlbany's commencement ceremony next month.

Judge Judy is not stranger to the campus.

Her son and two stepsons each graduated from UAlbany.
