Dogs abandoned in U-Haul truck up for adoption

MENANDS - Two out of four dogs left out in a parked U-Haul truck in below freezing temperatures last month are ready for new homes.

Gavin and Neve are both pit bull mixes.

The dogs were brought to the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society after being found in a locked truck parked at a Colonie Motel.

The other two dogs are going to foster homes.

Their owner, Anthony Walker, was charged with animal cruelty. Police say he is the same man charged in connection with the railroad puppies case.

Railroad puppies suspect accused of abusing more dogs

COLONIE - A man already caught up in accusations he abused puppies is now facing new charges of animal abuse.

Colonie police say Anthony Walker of Albany left four dogs locked in a U-Haul truck in the frigid weather. They say the dogs were emaciated when they found them.

Walker is the same man who was charged earlier this month in connection with three puppies found injured near some railroad tracks in Albany. One of those dogs died and another lost a paw.

Now police say Walker is responsible for the dogs found locked in the cargo space of a rental truck parked at the Super 8 motel on Central Avenue.

The dogs were taken to the Capital District Animal Emergency Clinic for treatment.

Cat-urday this weekend at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society

Cat-urday this weekend at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society

MENANDS – The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has announced that Saturday, August 18 to be Cat-urday.

All kittens 6 months and under will be $25, all cats and kittens above 6 months are free.

The Society has cats of every breed, age and personality looking for a loving home. Every cat ready for adoption has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated for distemper and rabies, tested for feline leukemia, de-wormed, and treated with flea and tick preventative. All cats also go to their new homes with 30 days of pet insurance and a bag of Science Diet pet food.

Cats and kittens continue to come into the shelter because too few people have their pets spayed or neutered. The Society offers several low-income spay/neuter programs. Pet owners who have a cat or cats that needs to be spayed or neutered should call the Society at 518-434-8128 to see if they qualify.

Feline Fest a success

Feline Fest a success

A record number of cats and kittens were adopted during Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s Feline Fest.

The fest was held on Thursday, July 26 through Sunday, July 29. According to the society, 135 cats and kittens found new homes.

“We were happy to see so many people respond to Feline Fest.  Many families left with more than one cat or kitten.  The smiles on the faces of the new pet parents, our volunteers and staff members were incredible!  You could just see how delighted they were and there was a lot of purring going on as well.  The good mood was contagious,” said Brad Shear, Executive Director in a statement.

According to Shear, the shelter was caring for over 340 felines, with 120 in foster care. This means that the number of animals at the shelter is more manageable but the shelter is still open for adoptions.

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society will hold its sixth annual Feline Fest for July 26 through 29.

The four-day celebration will offer adoption prices at the Humane Society in Menands and at the society’s three satellite locations: The PetSmart stores in Glenmont and Latham and the PetCo in Clifton Park.

Currently, the shelter is caring for over 340 cats, 120 are in foster care and the society has taken in an average of 15 cats per day for the last month.

“This time of year we have a steady influx of kittens, pregnant cats and strays. More will be come in tomorrow, the next day, all summer long. These numbers put a tremendous strain on our resources and ability to care for animals and find them new homes. Our goal is to find new homes for as many of our orphaned cats and kittens as we can,” said Brad Shear, executive director in a statement.

Tips for keeping pets safe and calm during Fourth of July celebrations

Tips for keeping pets safe and calm during Fourth of July celebrations

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has suggested tips to keep your pets safe and calm during Fourth of July celebrations.

According to the society, pets often get loose during Independence Day week because they are afraid of loud and sudden noise that fireworks make.

“The loud sounds may cause some pets to panic, become excited or destructive, and perhaps run away from home in fear,” said Brad Shear, executive director of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

Below are some tips and useful information on keeping your pets safe:

To help reunite any missing pets with their families, this year the Humane Society is offering microchips for only $15 on Sunday, July 1 through Tuesday, July 3. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is implanted by a veterinarian between your pet’s shoulder blades. The chip serves as a permanent identification of your pet.

Humane Society and County Animal Response to hold excercise

MENANDS - On Thrusday, June 28, the Albany County Animal Response Team (CART) and the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society will hold a disaster response excercise to practice responding to disasters and caring for companion animals during an evacuation due to flooding.

Last year Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady Counties, applied for a grant to two fully stocked mobile animal shelters. These trailers can be deployed when disaster strikes and a temporary animal shelter needs to be established.

A small temporary animal shelter building will be set up and animals from the Humane Society will be walked through the exercise by volunteers who will act as the evacuees.
