Super Bowl Sunday is a festival of food

COLONIE - It seems Super Bowl Sunday is more then just a football phenomenon. For many Americans it is a festival of food.

Super Bowl Sunday ranks second -- only to Thanksgiving -- when it comes to American holidays known for food consumption. And that raises the question -- What is America's most quintessential culinary celebration?

"To me, it's Super Bowl Sunday," said Cheryl Brannock of Latham, taking in the Super Bowl with friends at Wolf's 1-11 in Colonie. "I like to be surrounded by my friends."

"I would say Thanksgiving is a more important American holiday," said Logan Rieth of Castleton. "You're with your family and it's a quiet time to talk about what you've done over the years."

More area Friendly's close their doors

Unfriendly times continue for the Friendly's restaurant chain. Five more locations in the Capital Region have shut down.

The closed stores include both Latham locations, along with restaurants in Albany, Glenville, and the one in Colonie Center.

That leaves the Capital Region with just five Friendly's locations -- in Clifton Park, East Greenbush, Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Troy and Johnstown.

According to Friendly's website, three Berkshire County, Mass. Friendly's also remain open along with a location in Bennington, Vt.

The chain filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in October.

Ted's Fish Fry welcomes new location

Today was the grand opening of the new Ted’s Fish Fry at its new location on 203 Wolf Road in Colonie.

The local restaurant chain was started back in 1949 by the late Theodore “Ted” Deeb and has continued into the family’s third generation. The chain is currently run by S.K. Deeb, son of Ted with help from his mother Ellen, sister Donna, and S.K.’s four children.

The restaurant prides itself on being fresh and fast and the staff is confident the new location will be a hit for busy shoppers this holiday season.

Friendly's files for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection

NEW YORK (AP) - The parent of the Friendly's restaurant chain is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and says it has already closed 63 of its stores -- including six in the Capital Region.

The 76-year-old company known for its ice cream and hamburgers says the economic downturn coupled with higher costs and high rents drove it to file for bankruptcy protection.

Friendly Ice Cream Corp., based in Wilbraham, Mass., says it has secured $70 million in financing and that its 424 remaining restaurants will stay open as it reorganizes under bankruptcy protection. Gift cards will continue to be honored.

It says the store closings and its reorganization efforts will better position it for the future.

Its current owners, Sun Capital Partners, will be the lead, or "stalking horse" bidders, in an auction process.
