Students unveil DWI danger billboard

Its prom season and students in Colonie have a reminder for all teens who plan to get behind the wheel.

Students at Colonie Central High School unveiled a new billboard on Central Avenue today.

It highlights the dangers of drinking and driving and was designed by 17 year old senior, Emily Himmelwright.

Lamar advertising chose her design out of 20 other entries.

The entries came from students in the school's digital merchandising, design and digital photography classes.

Colonie students submit designs for dangers of drinking project

The Colonie Central High School Art Department announced Tuesday that the Digital Merchandising and Design, and Digital Photography classes have been working on a project to teach students and others about the dangers of drinking.

The designs were submitted to Lamar Advertising and a winner has been chosen and the winner will have his or her design printed and displayed on a billboard in the Colonie community.

A billboard will be unveiled on Thursday, May 3 at 10 a.m. on Central Avenue near the intersection of Route 155 near Fermac Street.

Schumer says raising interest rate unacceptable

If congress doesn't act, the interest rate for Stafford loans will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

New York’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer says that's unacceptable.

Schumer is pushing for legislation extending the 3.4 percent rate for one year and hopes to make it permanent.

A vote on the issue is scheduled in the house on Friday.

Local students to take part in nationwide anti-bullying rally

HUDSON - On Friday, May 4, students in Hudson will join thousands of others across the country to take a stand against bullying.

The Group Stand4Change.org is organizing a rally to bring attention to the problem of bullying.

Construction Career Day

GLENMONT - On April 25-26, high school students from around the region will take part in the 11th Annual Capital District Construction Career Day, a two day hands on event designed to introduce youth to the many opportunities available in the construction industry.

The event will be attended my professionals from over 30 local companies, state agencies, and labor organizations.

The construction industry is on the rebound in New York State, and the Governor has recogized the importance of investing in New York's infrastructure which will put people back to work.

The event will be at Tri-Cities Laborers Training Facility in Glenmont.

NY schools can become 'Green Schools'

Local schools can participate in the Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Green School program.

According to the DEC, schools across New York are making a difference in their communities with programs that help recycle, reduce waste, save energy and conserve resources.

The DEC has outlined benefits of becoming a green school:

  • Prepare students to understand and act on the current and future environmental challenges that face all New Yorkers.
  • Model environmental and conservation best management practices in their building and in landscape design and maintenance can reduce costs.
  • Build partnerships with the local community to design and implement projects and programs that will result in a healthier environment and safer school.

The DEC has dedicated a website that details green schools and what they do.

Johnstown boys varsity lacrosse team wears pink for good cause

On the April 7, the Johnstown boys varsity lacrosse team played their game at Knox and donned pink attire in support of breast cancer. This was part of the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative.

April 7 also marked the second annual Section II vs. Section III Lacrosse Showdown where six teams participated and friends and community members helped raise money for the American Cancer Society. People from Johnstown, Clinton, Colonie, Glens Falls, Rome Free Academy and Utica Proctor bought pink shoelaces and made generous donations helping to raise almost $2,000.
